In hitchhiking plow to Santiago
From Puerto Montt with huge wave of people from city who wanted to feel a little bit of nature, I came to Puerto Varas. Everybody told me that lake which is there, is extremely beautiful, but huge curtain of black clouds were like a wall. I camped 3 daysin front of most expansive hotel in city because I thought that maybe someone will destroy that wall, but nobody came to do it. Just police to say that we (me and other backpackers) can’t make fire here. So I waited and waited but I didn’t waste time, because I met a lot of great people, street musicians and local theater, and even group of Mexican mariachi! Finally I throw gloves and I went without view of beautiful volcano which is on the other side of lake.
Crossroad of… cables
Couple from Brazil. they’re making the same rout than me, but they gonna be in Canada after… one year 🙂
On road I met three friends who are playing on many instruments. They invited me with beer and weed, we made high’five, and went more with thought that we will not meet any more. Not this time! From road took me Patricio in his white van who took absolutely every backpackers, so he took me and my 3 friends! We went to local beer factory, so our van has changed in disco on wheels 🙂
When we stopped on patrol station we felt that will be very difficult to collect once again that kind of group in one van. We promised that we gonna meet once again in Santiago (unfortunately that never happen) and I went to north. I went only 50km but in small Los Lagos I met wall of sounds and smells of meat. I realized that there is 3 days of city birthday! I met there group of some local guys with whom I spend almost whole night, but than other group invited me for fish! That was really crazy night 😀 That night we camped together on main square of city. Next day took me another crazy guy with open van who’s taking I thought that maybe we gonna do same thing like yesterday but people there were so closed. Nobody talked to each other. So we made high-five on cross road and I went on my own way – with police guy or truck driver with huuuge faith! Another night I spend on highway crossroad. I don’t know why but I wakeup with whole anthill inside my tent! But worst is that I didn’t took from them cash for night…
I think that the best drivers are the christian one. They stop for everybody! Theirs hurt, mind, faith or whatever else is saying to stop and help. Cool!
With song on my mouth I reached Chillan, city where I should meet Mauricio (I knew him from amazing camp in La Junta). I spend there 3 days. Completely chill. (Do You know that in almost every Chilean pub is secret “red room” where You can buy almost all kind of drugs?)
Church-vagina
Mauricio with dad and girlfriend. When Mauricio father noticed tht I didn’t tryed traditional drinks from that region, took his cellphone, said two words, and after few seconds on table was a lot of bottles 😀
Father of Mauricio worked almost 20 years in Police and was one from the first who went inside “Colonia Dignidad”. In his home I saw original documents about that place. Was funded by Paul Schafer, soldier of III Reich, psychopath, pederast and a guy who believe that have contact with God. Formally that was convent but inside was like in real nazi camp! During Pinochet government people from opposition was tortured there. That was also place where government tasted new weapons! I needed to visit that place! Today is super modern hotel and restaurant but people still remember here Schafer. I met there guy who was born in that place so that was really good occasion to ask about everything. It’s strange that people even now want to make here weddings!
To Villa Bavaria I went on back…
… of biggest pickup I ever went 😀
Place where Schafer made meetings. Now here is restaurant. Bon appetit!
Finally with producer of wooden piggybank I reached Talka. When I looked for place to stay I found abandoned house where I spend that night. Next day I made turn for border where I wanted to see famous upside-down waterfall. Something like 150km I made in… 8 cars! When I walked on road side some family shouted to me and invited for dinner. That was really nice time, we talked and laughed a lot!
I wondering how is possible that whole things on truck are secured only by tapes!
I went because I made only half of road and was less and less of cars. I met only cars from mines. I walked there a lot but finally I reached upside-down waterfall (it’s really good name for that place because wind there is so strong that is pushing up almost whole water!). I met there crazy 3 friends (everybody had more than 50 years) who were traveled through whole Chile in small truck. Point is that inside was place only for 2 persons that’s why one always went on back. From that moment I was also inside that crazy truck 🙂 Together we went to closed border. Whole signs on earth and sky said that huge storm is coming. My old friends wanted to camp somewhere on field. That was interesting way to commit suicide, I thought, but because I wanted to live much more than them, I decided to stay on border. I asked soldiers on border if I can sleep somewhere there that night – of course not! Last hope was in small shop which was next to border. That shop and café was inside container so I thought can survive eventually flood. Inside I met owner, Oscar, and waitress Luna. They gave me food and a lot of stories about beautiful Laguna which is located on the other side of Chilean border. I had option to went to city with Oscar but finally I decided to stay for that night inside container on border. That was good decision because I don’t know what happened outside but from inside that sounds like end of the world. Next morning my old friends came back so together we went to see that Laguna and almost we went to Argentinian jail. But what happened there You can read HERE.
My shelter 🙂
We came back to Luna for my things, and with old guys I went almost to Talka. And from there directly I headed Santiago where I came with completely smoked truck driver. He gave me not only big clouds but also cash for bus!
During my trip on south I met other backpackers who told me that I can stay in theirs home in Santiago. but when i reached it they told me that I can’t stay there… That’s why first night I camped near fence of public park. But next few nights I spend in home of couchsurfer host who had… private swimming pool! That was good basecamp and in city there is a lot of see! A lot of good museums and art gallery with quite good staff (I went there during last day of Picasso exhibition! But I didn’t saw nothing besides looong queue). VERY good street theaters and murals. Quite a lot of green fields and black guys from Kenia and Senegal. What they do there? It’s a question. Architecture? Nothing special, but I need to say that city made me quite good impression. A lot of street sellers who were sold almost everything but most important was street food. You can buy there homy cakes from carton box, baked potatoes from kid cart, fresh juices and meet from shop carts. There was a guy with small casino on cartoons on street of banks. There was a lot of places on street where You can buy tarot. There were a lot of theaters who played whole night. And there was terremoto. Classic drink from Santiago. Young white wine with shot of pisco and huge ball of pineapple ice-cream. They told me that after one I can feel earthquake and than I can take replica, small version of terremoto. After one I didn’t felt nothing but I knew half of place and legendary (as they told me) local country singer. Place we closed with sing!
My host in orange shirt and freinds who safe my ass…
… and gave best wine and private swimming pool 🙂
River in city. Proof that You shouldn’t drink tap water here
Polish architect who build in Santiago few characteristic buildings
Fresh juice
Hot-dog with avocado. Characteristic for Santiago. Thanks God only for Satiago…
That theater made show for whole night!
Terremoto
Famous singer. He’s never put down hat because under it have huuuge baldness 🙂
I went up to San Cristobal, one from the highest peaks in city ( I went there with two cold beers to drink it up there, so I went very fast, but when I reached top I heard… sing of angels! I didn’t knew that on top is sanctuary! But when I went up there with beers I didn’t wanted to come down with them 🙂 ). So how is Santiago from up? Grey, dirty, and monochromatic with huge smog. It’s looks a little bit like a Mexico city because around there is huge chain of mountains. 20 or 30 years ago there was a guy who wanted to make whole in mountains to put inside a little of air. Isn’t much easier is to make less pollution I think? But government don’t think about that. That’s why metro in high period of day is much more expansive than normally.
Mote con Huesillo. Famous drink from Chile.
In some place I found fresh juicec. “What kind of flavours You have?” I asked. And than he showed me that thing on wall… Heaven!
During night before my fly to Easter island I changed my CS host. And because there was different backpacker we went to city and not stopped on one beer. that’s why I almost over sleeped for my fly! How was my trip to Easter Island You can read HERE.
When I came back to Santiago I met my good friend from Poland who came with her friend to South America to spend vacation. Wow, that was really good time! Finally I could talked with someone in Polish! I also met girl who I met in Buenos Aires, we spend together one night in home when she lived. In that home (complicated incepcion, isn’t it? 🙂 ) I met her friends. Extremally intelligent guys! Good time 🙂 But finally I went Santiago to meet… Road of Stars!
I teached them some Polish words. In kitchen 🙂
